Once a humble Roman stopover along the great London-to-Brighton route, Crawley blossomed in medieval times as a bustling market village, with its hammers clanging in the ironworks and its fields bursting with bountiful harvests.

But the real pièce de résistance came in 1947, when Crawley was handpicked—yes, handpicked!—to become a New Town, a shining beacon of post-war Britain’s pluck and determination.
